Course Description:
This course aims at helping students integrate an intellectual understanding of music by using English in both academic and professional ways. Emphasis will be placed on text reading, real-time listening, and analysis.
Students will learn:
- Harmonic and formal principles in common-practice tonal music, and how these are used in different contexts;
- Compositional strategies for generating structural and/or expressive expectations;
- The inter-relationship of tonal syntax, phrase structure, motivic organization, and stylistic character;
- Different strategies for constructing analytical interpretations;
- Ways of communicating musical insights through verbal or written means in English.
Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory at both lecture and individual meetings, and the most critical part of your grading.

Burstein & Straus (2016) Concise Introduction to Tonal Harmony - 1st edition
Homework Policy:
- Assignments from the workbook will be due the week after it is assigned.
- Marks will be deducted (by 50%) for a late submission.
- Assignments submitted more than two weeks late or submitted after the instructor has already handed back the corrected assignments to the class will not be accepted.
- Specific guidelines on assignments of the academic writing will be issued separately.
- Work on your own. Students handing in assignments/papers with unreasonably similar features may raise questions of originality and plagiarism.

基于学生音乐学和舞蹈学的专业理论知识,从更加综观的人文社科角度出发,通过对与音乐舞蹈学产生交叉的文化人类学进行学习,可以拓展学生的文化观念,加深其研究深度,使学生在文化中更加宏观的理解认识音乐和舞蹈。通过结合音乐舞蹈对象对文化人类学的理论方法进行探讨,有利于拓展和增强研究生的学习观念和对知识的理解能力,加深不同专业的学生对多元音乐舞蹈对象在文化语境、内涵、价值层面的认识,增强人文学科感性认识和社会科学理性认识的结合,促进学生从此前本科知识性向硕士专业性和研究性的转变.
